Worldly Wednesday: Go Green!

How many pieces of paper per year does the average teacher use?  How many sticky notes are sold per year?  The average tree produces 80,500 sheets of paper.  That seems like quite a bit until you compare that to the annual use of paper.  It requires 786 million trees to produce the worlds annual paper supply.

Is your classroom Green?  I really hadn’t given this much thought, because I am not worksheet teacher. Ok, now that I think about it, I am quite a sticky note fanatic.  Oh and when writing grants I tend to print numerous copies to write all over. Maybe I am being pretty wasteful.

Can our class really make a difference?   YES! If you recycle 2 sheets per day for a year, you would save approximately 42 trees.

Our Class Challenge
We are going to go green for the first nine weeks of this semester to see how close to paperless we can get.  How are we going to do this?

  •  Notebooks kept on computer
  •  Student Jumpdrives
  •  Parents communicate by phone and email
  •  Class handouts using Box Widget
  •  Online quizzes

How much paper do you think we will use?  Please give us your feedback by participating in this poll:

What other steps could we take to conserve paper?

  1. This idea may be a little expensive but it will be woth it in the long haul. You could buy a PDAIf you need to send a note to a teacher typeit on there and send it by a student.

  2. When you use a piece of paper write small you don’t to use the whole paper it doesn’t take all that.

  3. WOW!!! I didn’t know how many trees were being used for paper.
I wish we didn’t cut down so many trees. When we cut down so many trees animals loose places to live. Thats just sad 🙁 poor animals and trees.

  4. If you buy a PDA,which may be a little expensive but worth it. Type a note on it then send by student to the recipient. Then vice-versa.

  5. I think people should use the web more often to save the use of paper thats why emails are set up for the use of easier and up to date connection with other people and faster access

  7. 786 million trees thats a little much to be cutting down. Its like cutting down a large forest.Thats acres upon acres of trees. If an average tree produces 85,000 sheets of paper,we should try to conserve more than we are using. Think about the next time you reach for a piece of paper, what could you do not too use it?

  8. WOW!!!…I DIDNT KNOW THAT THEY USE SO MANY TREES I REALLY LOVE TREES SO I HOPE THEY CUT DOWN ON THE TREE CUTING

  10. That is crazy! I cant believe that many trees were cut down to make paper. It really make you wonder were they got those trees to make all that paper. It also makes you think how many animals had to die to make all that paper.

Those trees could be homes for many animals or living things. If you were an animal and you lived in a tree you wouldn’t want people to cut down your home. Think about what you are doing to those poor animals. If we didn’t use so much paper maybe we wouldn’t have to cut down so many trees. I did a google search on facts about trees and I found out that many people have heard the statistic that “a ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees.” So do your best to recycle as much paper as you can!

  13. I THINK TEACHERS IN EVERY SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE A LIMIT ON HOW MANY PIECES OF PAPER THEY CAN USE THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER AND THE SCHOOL YEAR.

  15. That is a great idea. Maybe we could get a homeroom/advisory class to use the math Palms in all classes. that is a thought for next nine weeks:)

  16. I didn’t know that we use so many trees just for paper. And i think that people should use the internet more often so they can see what is going on in the world

  17. I feel thats its a great idea for us to go green. There are many reasons for us to go green. The most important reason for us to go green is so that we can conserve our rain forest . The rain forest is the lead provider of most of the everyday medication taken by millions daily.
